St Peter’s church is a large gothic building on a roundabout in the West End of Ashton. It is one of the “Waterloo” churches which were built after Napoleon’s defeat in It was consecrated in Rev W B Kirk, the incumbent from towrote a poem 23 pages long in praise of St Peter’s and its parishoners.

It is contained in a book of poems about Ashton, published only a year after Dr KIRK’s induction. Perhaps we should be grateful that Dr KIRK describes his book as a “few verses,” for some of it is very poor poetry, but there is no doubt about his interest.
